Old Holland uses only
concentrated lightfast pigments. It is therefore not necessary
to grade the lightfastness. As opposed to the frequently used
raw oils, these pigments are ground only with pure, cold pressed,
sun bleached, virgin linseed oil. Only the first cold pressing
of the oil contains the maximum acids which have very good oxidation
and polymerizing effects on the painting. As little oil as possible
is used when making the color, because too fat an
oil paint will wrinkle. It is a good idea to paint as thinly as
possible, using refined turpentine or white spirits as a thinner.
Pigments are ground on machine rollers made of porphyry (steel
rollers can affect the color of some pigments). Old Holland oils
come closest to those used by the great Dutch Masters.
